Donald Trump's campaign has been preparing for Kamala Harris for weeks in case Joe Biden withdraws from the presidential race, which he officially announced last night, sources told Reuters. They say Trump will now try to convince undecided voters that the current vice president is embroiled in the biggest problems facing the country -- immigration policies and the cost-of-living crisis.
Biden's sudden withdrawal and his endorsement of Harris took the election race to a new level just eight days after Trump survived an assassination attempt. For weeks, Biden battled intense pressure to withdraw from the election while insisting he was continuing to campaign.
"She is the co-pilot of Biden's vision. If they want to turn to the version of Biden 2.0, and put Kamala on the ballot, we are certainly fine with that," said a source from the Trump campaign.
Although Harris is not yet the official Democratic nominee, a number of prominent members of the party have already endorsed her, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Trump also insulted Harris at a rally in Michigan on Saturday.
"Have you ever seen her laugh?" She is crazy. You can tell a lot about someone by how they smile. She's crazy," Trump said.
After Biden's announcement that he was stepping down, Trump emphasized that it would be even easier for him to defeat Harris in the November election.
