Donald Trump announced that he had a "long and productive" phone call with Vladimir Putin, during which they agreed to begin peace talks on Ukraine immediately. He said that both of them want to stop the killing of millions of people in the war and that he would immediately inform Volodymyr Zelensky about his conversation with Putin.
"Putin and I discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar, and other issues. We both recalled that our countries fought together successfully in World War II and talked about the great benefits we could one day have if we worked together. First, we agreed that we wanted to stop the killing of millions of people in the Russia-Ukraine war. We agreed to work together and begin negotiations immediately. I will be calling President Zelensky immediately to inform him of our conversation," Trump wrote on his social network.
He said he had asked Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Adviser Michael Walz and Special Representative for Ukraine Steve Witkoff to lead the negotiations.
"Millions of people have died in this war, which certainly would not have happened if I were president, and therefore it must end. I am confident that the negotiations will be successful," Trump added.
He has repeatedly said he can quickly end the war in Ukraine, without revealing how. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said today that he does not believe Ukraine can return to its pre-2014 borders and does not see it as a member of NATO.
