A December 2022 video showed Hamas fighters storming a training base, firing rockets and taking prisoners while surrounding a fake Israeli building. According to CNN's analysis, the camp was new and very close to the pedestrian Erez border crossing, which Hamas militants breached last Saturday, after which they attacked some 20 Israeli communities, killing more than 1.000 civilians.
Another video recorded a year ago shows Hamas fighters practicing take-offs, landings and paraglider attacks, an unusual method used in the invasion of Israel.
CNN analyzed Hamas training and propaganda videos recorded over a two-year period that show months of training for the Oct. 7 attack and found that they took place in at least six locations in Gaza. Two of these sites are located within a kilometer of the most heavily fortified and controlled section of the border, one in central Gaza, and three in the southern part of the enclave. Satellite images from the last two years do not show that the Israeli military attacked these sites during that period.
After the shocking attack by Hamas, in which around 150 people were taken hostage, questions were raised about the intelligence and operational failings of Israel's security apparatus, which is considered one of the most sophisticated in the world.
"Hamas has many training bases. "A lot of those places are made to look civilian," Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said, adding that Israel has not had a major escalation with Hamas in more than two years.
However, five locations have no civilian elements and are almost identically constructed and arranged. Some campsites have fences and gates.
A senior Hamas official, Ali Baraka, revealed that Saturday's attack had been two years in the making and that the group's allies had not been notified in advance of the group's intentions.
