The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres yesterday called on world leaders, who will gather next week in New York, to find a solution to the difficult geopolitical situation, the French media reported.
- We will gather at a time when humanity is facing enormous challenges – from an intensified climate crisis to escalating conflicts, going through a global crisis in the cost of living, a sharp increase in inequalities and a spectacular turn in the world of technology, said Guterres.
He was speaking days before the start of general political debates at the UN General Assembly, where dozens of heads of state and government are expected.
People expect their leaders to find a way out of this mess, he said, decrying fragmentation around the world that he said reduces the international community's capacity to respond to crises.
- The war in Ukraine "is a key factor in worsening geopolitical divisions. Thus, the possible solution, peace in Ukraine in accordance with the UN Charter and international law will be very important for reducing geopolitical divisions, he noted.
Guterres indicated that next week he will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and that an attempt will be made to revive the Black Sea Grain Agreement. Negotiated under the auspices of Ankara and the United Nations in the summer of 2022, this agreement aimed to ensure the safe export of grain through Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea. However, in July of this year, Russia withdrew from the agreement, which is important for global food security.
