Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has announced his World Cup squad. There are no Real Madrid players on the list.
The coach has included injured forwards Lamine Jamal and Nico Williams in the squad, as he expects them to be rehabilitated by the start of the World Cup, which will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
For the first time, Spain will be going to a major competition without Real Madrid players. Defender Dean Hausen was in the running but did not pass the final filter.
Mikel Merino, who has played just once for Arsenal since injuring his foot in January, has been called up, as has Paris Saint-Germain's Fabian Ruiz, who has also had injury problems.
The reigning European champions will play in Group H, with the competition starting on June 15 against the Seltor Islands. In the second round, Spain will play Saudi Arabia on June 21 and Uruguay five days later.
Spain will begin preparations on Saturday, and will also play friendly matches against Iraq on June 4 and Peru on June 9.
Since winning the title in 2010, Spain has not advanced beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup.
