Federal immigration agents shot and killed a man in Minneapolis on Monday, drawing hundreds of protesters to a city already reeling from another fatal shooting a few weeks ago. Details of the shooting were not immediately clear, but Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the man was shot during the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration. Police said the man was 37 years old.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara appealed for calm, both from the public and federal law enforcement. O'Hara said the slain man's only previous interaction with law enforcement, as far as he knows, was for traffic tickets.
"We believe he is a lawfully licensed firearms owner," O'Hara said. "Our request today is that those federal agencies operating in our city do so with the same discipline, humanity and integrity that effective law enforcement in this country requires," the chief said. "We urge everyone to remain calm. We recognize that there is a lot of anger and a lot of questions surrounding what happened, but we need people to remain calm in the area," O'Hara said.
The shooting occurred during widespread daytime protests over the Jan. 7 shooting death of 37-year-old Renee Goode, who was killed when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fired into her vehicle. The incident today occurred nearly 2 kilometers from where Goode was shot.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara urged protesters who gathered at the scene of the shooting to remain calm and leave the area.
"Please don't destroy our city," he said at a press conference.
“This is not isolated or random. The Trump administration is trying to force us into submission, rather than protect us… This administration cannot continue to violate constitutional rights under the guise of immigration enforcement,” said Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. “The agency is out of control. How much more evidence do my Republican colleagues in Minnesota need to speak up?” said Democratic Rep. Angie Craig.
