Loyalty is a virtue, but it can also be a vulnerability. Managers often value workers who are perceived as loyal, but new research shows they are often taking advantage of them by assigning them unpaid work and multitasking. According to researchers, some managers unknowingly do this.
- Companies want loyal employees and there is a lot of research that shows that loyal employees bring various positive benefits to companies - said the main researcher Matthew Stanley.
However, managers seem inclined to exploit these employees, he pointed out.
The research analyzed almost 1.400 managers who filled out an online questionnaire about fictitious work scenarios. The majority of managers responded that they gave more work to employees who had a reputation for loyalty. Other positive employee characteristics, such as honesty and fairness, did not have the same effect as loyalty.
– Loyal workers are more often chosen for exploitation. And then, when they do something for which they are not paid, they end up getting a greater reputation as a loyal worker, which increases the chances of being selected again for such responsibilities in the future - says Stanley.
The survey also showed that the managers considered this to be normal, and the additional work is a function of the loyalty of the employees.
