All countries from the Western Balkans are on an unnecessarily long road to membership in the European Union. Macedonia should have been a member of the EU a long time ago, and therefore I call on the president of the European Commission to do everything possible for the countries of the Western Balkans to enter the European Union as soon as possible and to show greater empathy for the citizens of this part of the world. From the example of Ukraine, we saw that the road to Europe must be faster. This was emphasized by former Croatian President Stipe Mesic, who yesterday together with President Stevo Pendarovski participated in the Macedonian Energy Forum 2023, sharing opinions on the energy and political situations and challenges facing the country and the region.
According to Mesic, the simplest message to the country is to fulfill the standards and conditions of the European Union in order to speed up its accession to the EU.
The current Europe in the EU, he assessed, is a little tired of joining, and the countries that are not part of the EU are tired of waiting.
- The attractiveness of the EU is gradually decreasing and that is not good, and the creators of the EU were leaders and knew what they wanted. Today, sorry, I don't see real leaders either in Europe or in the world, they are bureaucrats in Brussels with big salaries, but I don't see results. Instead of speeding up the entry of waiting countries and helping them to join the EU as soon as possible, the appeal of the EU is gradually disappearing, Mesic said.
