Archival documents from Australia on Greek assimilation policy

The National Archives of Australia preserves a document from 1934 showing that a certain Atanas Vasil Delianis, a Macedonian emigrant, requested that his real name, not the Greek form, be entered in his Australian citizenship.

In his statement to Australian authorities, he said he was Macedonian, and that his name in the Greek form was written under duress.

The document clearly and unequivocally states that Macedonians under Greek rule were forced to use the Greek forms of their names, instead of their original Macedonian names.

This is just another document that shows only a small part of the assimilationist Greek policy implemented for years towards the Macedonian minority in Aegean Macedonia.
