The incredible discovery was recorded in 2018, exactly 132 years after the message was written, the Daily Star reports.
Tonya was enjoying her walk when she noticed a pile of trash and decided to pick it up. Then she found a bottle with a message.
"She thought it would look nice on the bookshelf, so she brought it," her husband Kim said at the time.
The couple carefully removed the note and dried it in the oven, then realized that the message was written on June 12, 1886, and in German!
"The finder was asked to hand over the letter to the German consulate," added the husband.
Meanwhile, experts from the Western Australian Museum have confirmed the authenticity of the message, after consulting with colleagues from Germany and the Netherlands.
It would turn out that the bottle had been dropped from the ship Pola as part of the German Maritime Observatory's experiment on ocean and shipping lanes.
"A search of archives in Germany found an entry in the ship's captain's original logbook. On June 12, 1886, he noticed that the bottle had been thrown into the sea. "The date and coordinates match the message found," explained Dr. Ross Anderson.
The bottle was thrown into the southeast Indian Ocean while the ship was traveling from Cardiff to Indonesia. The currents carried it to the Australian coast, and who knows how long it was hidden in the sand or garbage.
