Australian swimmer Cameron McEvoy (31) set a new world record in the 50-meter freestyle today, swimming the shortest sprint section in 20,88 seconds and winning by almost a body length at the China Open swimming meet in Shenzhen.
Makevoy improved by three hundredths the result with which Brazilian Cesar Cielo became the world record holder in 2009, when the use of polyurethane swimsuits was still allowed.
The Australian is the reigning Olympic champion and two-time world champion in this discipline, and in the race in Shenzhen he left behind American Jack Alexi (21,57) and compatriot Kyle Chalmers (22,01).
